TABLA is the most popularly played percussion instrument of north Indian music, consisting of two drums, the bayan or the left drum and the dayan or the right drum.

Ustad Akram Khan hails from the family of Tabla Players called Ajrada Gharana. He is a
renowned performer of India. He received his initial training under the guidance of Ustad Niazu
Khan and from his great grandfather, Ustad Mohd. Shafi Khan, who was famous for technical
style and guidance. In addition he continued his training under the expert guidance of his
father (Late) Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan.
He has been participating in prestigious festivals in India and abroad since a very young age.
In 1992, Shri R. Venkataraman, the President of India applauded and praised him for his
remarkable performance at the President House. Apart from solo, he has accompanied
legendry Maestros like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Birju Maharaj to name a
few.
In 1993, Ustad Akram Khan was appointed visiting Professor at the University of Washington,
Seattle. He has been playing for A.I.R and has been honoured as a ‘Top Grade Tabla Player.’
Ustad Akram Khan is a recipient of ‘Gyan Peeth Award.’
