The Persian word SEHTAR is the source of the name SITAR. It is the most widely used plucked string instrument and is well-known for playing a significant part in Hindustani classical music. Hindustani music is characterised by intricate melodies, intricate rhythmic patterns, and a great deal of improvisation. As an instrument with multiple strings and complex sound capacity, the Sitar is frequently performed as a solo instrument.

Born to a family of devoted musicians, Dr. Madan Shankar Mishra’s musical legacy has been bequeathed down six generations of the Madhubani Gharana. His father renowned Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra, who was also instrumental in setting up the Department of Sitar at Triveni Kala Sangam, was the disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar.
