Offline Course – Basic Course on Appreciation of Documentary Films from 07-11 October 2024
Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, under its ‘Centre for Open Learning (CFOL)‘ initiative, announces Basic Course on Appreciation of Documentary Films in Delhi.
Following are the details in this regard;
- Name of the Course: Basic Course on Appreciation of Documentary Films
- Dates: 07-11 October 2024 (05 days)
- Timings: 10 am to 5 pm
- Total no. of participants: 70 (Course will not be conducted if there are less than 56 participants)
- Nationality: Indian
- Medium of Instructions: The medium of instruction would be English and Hindi. Participants are expected to have adequate knowledge of English and/ or Hindi as regards to reading, writing & speaking.
- Age: 18 years & above as on 01st October 2024
- Educational Qualifications: HSC (12th pass), in exceptional cases 10th pass will also be considered
- Venue: Triveni Auditorium, Triveni Kala Sangam, 205, Tansen Marg, Todermal Road Area, Mandi House, Delhi, 110001
Fees: Rs 7,200/- per participant (base fee = Rs 6102/- and GST = Rs 1098/-)
Course fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, tea/ coffee, snacks etc.
Course fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances. Course fee of all the non – selected participants will be refunded within 21 working days of the course commencement. Also, due to any reason, if the course is cancelled by FTII, course fee will be refunded.
However, due to any reason, if the course is postponed OR cancelled by the organisers, course fee will be refunded.

- Participants need to assure general decency, decorum etc. on the campus. Failing to do so will lead to cancellation of admission without refunding course fee apart from taking internal disciplinary action and dealing the matter as per law of the land. All rights in this regard are reserved with FTII.
- Certificates: Participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of the course which will carry logo of FTII & CFOL and will be jointly signed by FTII Director and the Course Director. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory to get certificate.

Course Contents
This workshop is for all those people who have tried their hands in making documentary films and want to know more about its making, for those who love watching documentary films and want to go beyond casual watching, for those persons in government/ngo/private institutions who use documentary film as part of their work to educate, propagate, make aware, critic, argue and communicate and for teachers who want to tell their students about this critical medium.
This workshop will highlight various issues and concerns that has been historically embedded in the practice of Documentary film making around objectivity, advocacy, bias, self/other, history, discourse and aesthetics. These themes will be structured through the grids of mode of addresses and subgenres.
The participants will be introduced to many inspiring films, film makers and their inner world in both World Cinema and in India.
The broad areas that will be covered are Documentary Representations: Claims and Responsibilities, Early Years (Reality as Spectacle, Citizenship and State), Self In The Eyes Of The Other: Ethnographic Documentary of Jean Rouch, Truth of the Matter: Cinema Verite & Direct Cinema and Poetic Documentary.
Course Director: Sudipto Acharyya
Sudipto Acharyya has studied cinema at FTII Pune, with specialization in Direction and Screenplay Writing (1997-2000). He has completed his MA in Film Studies from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His Diploma film HARBOUR LINE was part of No Masala Touring Film Festival in Germany. It was exhibited at the Asia-Europe Short Film Festival-2007, Washington DC, organised by Indian Embassy.
His first independent production is Weekend Chill, a digital film made with crowd fund. He has directed several short films & one feature length film for television and other institutions.
Sudipto has a long engagement with teaching Cinema in various institutions like FTII-Pune, SRFTI-Kolkata, Roop Kala Kendro -Kolkata, Kolkata Film & Television Institute and Center for Film & Television (Allahabad University). He is currently a Senior Faculty and Head of Affiliations-Short Course Unit at Whistling Woods International-Mumbai. His workshops on Film Appreciation, Documentary History: Ethics and Aesthetics and Short Film Screenplay Writing are well attended by film students across the country.
His recent academic papers on cinema are published in several international scientific journals on Cinema and were invited to conferences at film schools like Lithuania Music and Theatre Academy-Vilnius, Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities-Kaunas University of Technology-Lithuania, Nanyang Technological University-Singapore, Dodge College of Film and Media Arts-Chapman University, Witwatersrand University-Johannesburg and Bilgi University-Istanbul.
He is part of an Artistic Research project involving BRICS nation that looks at social interstices with the help of cinematic practices.
Sudipto Acharyya served as Head of Jury, International and National Feature Film Competition at Nepal International Film Festival, Kathmandu in March-April 2022 and then as Jury-Chairman for the 5th South Asian Short Film Festival at Kolkata in August 2022.

4. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.
5. Make necessary payment of Rs 7,200/-.
6. Once payment is done, please note "SBcollect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference.
7. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;
(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it
(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or printscreen (if using computer)
(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile
8. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.
